Spiritually Speaking
It is a great month the month of September. College football is back and I am a big college football fan. The Hawks are back with the first exhibition game on Sept. 22nd! The weather is turning cooler…..Yippee! Oh yeah and the new church year is beginning. It seems like that’s the way it is today. Church school and Sunday worship are an after thought. I can understand that adults lead busy lives and many people have to work on Sunday or Sunday may be their only day off.
When a child is 10 years old and offered a drink of alcohol at friend’s house what moral compass will they consult if they are not in Sunday School?
If a 13 year old girl is asked to have sex what spiritual reference point will she draw on if she has not been in Sunday School?
If a 16 year old is rejected by their first boy or girl friend if they have not been to Sunday School will they know that God loves them?
If an 18 year is running for cover under the hail of bullets in the Mid-East will he or she remember that God is always watching over them if they have not been to Sunday School?
If a 30 year old accountant is asked to cook the books will he or she remember that God will support him or her when he or she says no?
If a 50 year old is facing breast or other form a cancer will she remember that God is the Great Physician if she does not know the great stories of the Bible?
I know I am out on a ledge here but I think you get my drift. I realize that as we get older the stories of the bible seem less relevant but that is not the problem of the bible. That is a problem for the preacher to solve, which I try to do every Sunday. But unless the next generation knows those stories I am afraid we are sending our kids out into the ocean with only one paddle and a small boat that leaks. Your kids deserve better. Our kids deserve better.
Rally Day is the 12th but the most important day is the 19th. That is the day when a child’s spiritual education begins to strengthen them for life!
See you on the 19th!
